It is difficult to look at the situation in Aleppo and not see it in a broader context. Not only of Syria, but of Libya, the past several years, and of the entire region. And of international affairs in general.

We probably shouldn’t; we should probably view different situations entirely in their own light. But I can’t help but look at Aleppo – both the fall of Aleppo to rebel militias and foreign-backed mercenaries and now the liberation or reclamation of Aleppo by Syrian government forces – and see it as a point on a timeline that goes all the way back to Benghazi, Tripoli, Sirte and elsewhere. Some of you probably have heard of Eva Bartlett already.

The Canadian independent journalist and human rights activist has been in Syria numerous times in recent years, independently investigating and reporting on the situation in the country.

Last Friday, she was part of a press conference organised by the Syrian mission to the United Nations. Her response to a particular journalist is so perfect that I wanted to make sure I shared the footage in the above clip. (more…)

As was clear a few days ago when the Syrian Army liberated the Old City of Aleppo, it was just a matter of time before the remainder of rebel-held Aleppo would be recaptured.

The dramatic, wildly conflicting, reports circulating in the last 24 hours confirm that Aleppo has been fully liberated by the government forces: or about “99%”, according to official Syrian state sources. And I said a few days ago that when President Assad “declares victory”, it will be interesting to see how international leaders and agencies respond: well, that’s basically where we are now.  (more…)

RT was the first to break the news on the ground. (more…)

Don’t usually share just videos or short posts, but this footage is worth sharing: particularly in the context of yesterday’s post on the escalating anti-Russia campaign in Western media.

In this video, Maria Zakharova, the Russian Foreign Affairs spokesperson, gets visibly annoyed at a journalist who asks her the familiar Washington-scripted question: why is Russia supporting the Assad regime and killing civilians? (more…)

The hawks in Washington are in full propaganda mode to justify war with Moscow.

Everything is being thrown at Russia now: war crimes accusations in Syria, proposed suspension from the UN Security Council, MH-17, Eastern Ukraine, hacking allegations, covert support for Donald Trump, etc. (more…)

I was trying to actually take a short break from posting for a while; but the sheer level of BS being spewed as international powers desperately seek a renewed premise for military intervention in Syria is just stomach turning.

The BS propaganda game is accelerating more every day. On TV, on the radio, in newspapers, we see coverage of the crisis in Aleppo; now accompanied by dire commentary warning that Aleppo is going to be destroyed by the end of the year – and oh, we must do something! (more…)

At the end of my last post on Aleppo, Syria, and the battle to retake the country, I wrote that the chemical attacks were just the start: and that ‘extreme actions are likely, as well as a desperate escalation of propaganda’.

Picking up from yesterday‘s reports of chemical attacks in Syria, we of course have to be very careful when watching the media/propaganda war concerning what is happening in Aleppo and in Syria in general. (more…)
