So the Labour Party is now “an existential threat” to Jews in Britain…? Really? I mean, think about what that language is actually supposed to imply or evoke.

We’re not just being told about an ‘anti-semitism crisis‘ anymore, but an “existential threat“.

An existential threat suggests something with the potential to grow into the Nazi movement. I mean, that has to be the intended implication – that the Labour Party in Britian could end up the new Nazi Germany in terms of its treatement of – or attitude towards – Jewish people and that Jeremy Corbyn (the most consistent anti-racism campaigner of his time) could potentially be a new Hitler-type figure in the future.

Granted, he has made some bad decisions and, granted, he’s quite bad at PR (actually he’s pretty awful at PR) – but this is surely the most over-the-top, ridiculous chapter yet in this overwrought ‘Anti-Semitism Crisis‘.

On the matter of the “existential threat” meme, there is another, bigger reason this language is being deliberately evoked and it has nothing to do with Corbyn or the Labour Party – I’ll come back to that at the end, because it provides a much bigger context to all of this that most commentary always misses. There is a very serious problem with the resurgence of genuine anti-Semitism in different parts of the world, including in much of Europe.

The Internet is playing a massive part in that – and it’s not just the modern Neo-Nazi groups (of which there are now many) that are espousing a viciously anti-Semitic world view, nor just embittered Arabs, but lots of other people too.

Lots of this stuff is every bit as nasty as Nazi propaganda in the thirties and it goes way beyond any legitimate political issues and off into the realm of unbridled racial hatred of the most offensive kind. Jewish communities have every right to be extremely sensitive or defensive, given very real anti-Semitism and given the obvious historical contexts too. This upsurge in racism and propagandizing against Jews has to be taken seriously.

I don’t refute any of that. (more…)

And so we’re dragged back to the Ken Livingstone ‘Anti Semitism’ scandal and the torches and pitchforks are back out.

Livingstone, who has been described as “the only truly successful left-wing British politician of modern times”, may have made a comment that was offensive to some: but it was essentially only a historical observation, and the witch-hunt that followed it spiraled out of all proportion and continues now to rumble on. A brief word in respect for Labour MP Gerald Kaufman, who passed away a few days ago.

Kaufman, who served as a Member of Parliament from 1970 until his death in 2017, was the longest-serving MP in the House.

It was curious that Kaufman happened to pass away at precisely the time I was putting the finishing touches on a very extensive article that I’ve been working on since December – specifically about the extremist nationalists in Israel and about Israeli agencies’ connection to the rising Far-Right parties and politicians in Europe and the West. I feel as if we should congratulate voters in Austria for – on the balance – refusing to vote the Far-Right ‘Freedom Party’ to power.

In what was a very closely and nervously watched election in Austria yesterday, the Freedom Party candidate Norbert Hofer (who had won the first round of the election, with 35% of the vote – the party’s most successful ever result), was defeated by Left-leaning and Green-Party-backed Alexander Van der Bellen. Many, both in Austria and elsewhere in Europe, may have breathed a sigh of relief. The result, however, was very, very close, with Hofer receiving 49.7% of the vote: making it clear that the battle isn’t over and that the Freedom Party (FPÖ) is still very much in play for the coming months and years. So last week, as Marvel launched a new Captain America  series, the first issue caught most people off-guard with its ending and even apparently offended a number of fans.

It also caused on online uproar and made headlines across most major American media outlets, along with accusations of ‘anti-Semitism’ and the writer even receiving death threats. ‘Outrage’ has never been so easy and so viral. All that’s missing are the pitchforks, torches and angry mobs.

Since his accession to leadership of the Labour Party, barely a day has gone by without the political establishment and mainstream media engaging in anti-Corbyn, anti-Leftist propaganda or questioning Corbyn’s ‘legitimacy’ as leader of the opposition.

The controversy now rocking the Labour Party in Britain – which is now being blanketly labelled as an “anti-Semitic” party by the media – is actually a symptom of a much bigger problem.

“…in spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can’t build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery, and death. I see the world gradually being turned into a wilderness, I hear the ever approaching thunder, which will destroy us too, I can feel the sufferings of millions and yet, if I look up into the heavens, I think that it will all come right, that this cruelty too will end, and that peace and tranquility will return again.”
So wrote Anne Frank in one of the most moving passages of her diaries; a sentiment that, despite the horrific experiences she was witness to at the time, still contains that surviving trace of youthful hope and optimism for the future.
