Something is wrong with Luke Skywalker.
That much by now seems evident. The Luke Skywalker we’re going to encounter in  Star Wars: Episode VII  is going to be very different from the hero we’re used to or even from the young man we last knew from those timeless final scenes of  Return of the Jedi.
By the way, possible spoilers ahead; so be warned.

Actually it could be story of the year. This is one of those stories that just breaks your heart a little.

So the final trailer has broken out for what is the most rabidly anticipated film since Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.
Which is to say that the final trailer for  Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens  has sent fandom, film buffs and the Internet into a frenzy unseen since… since, well, the first and second teasers for Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.
Interestingly enough, it doesn’t reveal that much more than the previous trailer did; but reveals just enough to fascinate and lure us in that little bit further. And, yes, we just saw Princess Leia for the first time since 1983 (think about that).

As fandom continues to go gaga over the latest teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, I continue to be (mostly) alone in maintaining a more restrained, guarded approach to the imminent new Star Wars relaunch.
But it’s getting harder and harder to do that as more and more new footage emerges.

Someone asked me the other day why I’ve been so guarded about a new Star Wars Trilogy, particularly as I’ve been so defensive of the much-maligned prequels. So I’m going to explain it again for clarity.

There’s one definite thing I would’ve done differently if I’d been formulating this teaser for Star Wars: Episode VII. I don’t know who it’s supposed to be doing the voiceover character-wise; but I would’ve got Mark Hamill to say those words. Imagine – imagine – fan reaction if it had been Luke Skywalker’s voice in this teaser! They missed a trick, man.
That voiceover was one of the not-so-encouraging things about the trailer, by the way. Moving on, I’ve chosen to react to this teaser promo (as much as I can) entirely on its own terms and without any reference to how much I didn’t want there to be a new Star Wars trilogy (not because I don‘t love Star Wars – but the opposite).
Also – and I cannot state this loudly enough – we just saw the fucking Millenium Falcon again!!

There’s nothing in all creation more exciting than the words ‘Star Wars trailer’. Nor anything in life as exciting as that moment you see the trailer for a new Star Wars film for the first time. For whether it’s The Phantom Menace in 1999, Return of the Jedi in 1982 or The Force Awakens in 2014, there can only be that one first time you see it.
Tonight great ripples will reverberate throughout the fabric of the Living Force as Star Wars fandom awaits the first official teaser for the new Star Wars Trilogy.
This is what ‘breaking the Internet’ is really about – the first new, live-action Star Wars footage in almost a decade, its appearance the subject of hushed anticipation and with the inevitable trailer breakdowns and analyses to follow; all of it building inexorably to the release of Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens a year from now.

Information and spurious “updates” concerning the new Star Wars movies continue to flood the web, with new items emerging seemingly every day, some of which need to be taken with a pinch of salt, some of which might be more meaningful. I’m getting bored already of trying to “sift through the fog of lies”, as Palpatine once remarked.

There is of course a predictable level of excitement about the new trilogy, but there’s almost a fatuousness to this excitement in my opinion. I personally am not particularly excited; more sceptical, guarded. Certainly nothing like as excited as I was in the build-up to The Phantom Menace (oh, that trailer!) or Revenge of the Sith. (more…)
