The X-Men film franchise in general has been a mixed affair, with some truly wonderful films and some very lackluster offerings, some mind-blowing sequences or scenes and lots of very underwhelming ones.

One of the better things about this year’s major Marvel eventthe Avengers/X-Men: Axis storyline – has been the central role played by Magneto in the whole, vast business.
It has afforded the Master of Magnetism better characterization and focus than he’d had in a long while and has served to make him more interesting than I’ve found him for years.

I have to admit to having been a little sceptical about Avengers/X-Men: Axis when it was first being talked about. I hadn’t even intended to read it; but then, goodness, what a fun ride it was proving to be.
A guilt-ridden Tony Stark, a tortured Magneto getting back to his most interesting, a cool-as-hell Doctor Doom, a gigantic Red Skull, and much more besides. And then… and then it all went so very, very wrong with Avengers/X-Men: Axis #4 (more on that shortly).
But of course I should’ve known the good times wouldn’t last.

With the highly-anticipated Days of Future Past movie currently hitting cinema screens, it’ll be time again for X-Men comics devotees to react, positively or negatively, to the obligatory round of new characters featured; in this instance that means Quicksilver, Sunspot, Blink, Warpath and Bishop.
Judging from trailer footage, none of them – apart from maybe Blink – look particularly good, but maybe they’ll come across a lot better in their proper context, as there’s only so much we can glean from a trailer. Blink is probably the one I’m most curious to see and is also the oddest choice for inclusion in the film, but Quicksilver might be the most important in terms of his significance in the X-Men and broader Marvel universe.

So this passed month saw the beginning of a solo title for the Master of Magnetism and one-time “Saviour of Mutantkind” known as Erik Lensherr. Without doubt one of the greatest creations of the Marvel Universe, and I would unhesitatingly argue the greatest ‘villain’ Marvel Comics has ever given birth to (which, given the sheer volume of supervillains in the Marvel pantheon over the decades, is no small statement), Magneto  has nevertheless been a character in decline for a very long time, with very little happening in contemporary comics to enhance his legacy or standing.
Yes, even the best characters have dry spells, but for a character of Magneto’s stature and gravitas to have lost so much of his fascination over the years seems both extraordinary and somewhat disappointing.

I have to say, actually, that having seen the teaser, I’m slightly less excited about the film now than I was before I saw it. Nevertheless I choose to be optimistic and believe that the DOFP movie will be something well worth watching. Speaking as someone who generally doesn’t get excited about films at all, Days of Future Past has me more interested than I’ve been in any film since Revenge of the Sith; and that’s including this year’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movie.
